Stated Clerk Job Posting

The Presbyteries of Boston & Southern New England are seeking a 3/4-time Stated Clerk. The qualified candidate will be interested in serving as part of a team that approaches its role of resourcing the Presbyteries with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. We seek a Stated Clerk who is passionate for the Presbyterian Church (USA), self-directed, able to multi-task, maintains confidentiality and is detail-oriented. The qualified applicant will have a clear understanding of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and look to utilize that in ways that provide for flexibility, creativity, counsel and the furtherance of ministry. It is a requirement that the Stated Clerk be adept in the usage of technology.

The candidate will enjoy the benefit of a staff-colleague team in both presbyteries. In the Synod of the Northeast, there is a collegium of Clerks and in the larger denomination, training and resourcing is provided through the Office of the General Assembly.

The Presbyteries of Boston & Southern New England utilize virtual offices, which means that there are no physical shared office spaces and those who serve the Presbyteries must be comfortable with traveling a geographic expanse which covers the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Staffs of the Presbyteries meet monthly via video-conference and in person at other times during the year. All staff work remotely from home offices, occasionally travel for in-person meetings and work through remote meetings either by phone or video-conference. As part of the larger connectional Church, this position would have the resourcing of the Stated Clerk of the Synod of the Northeast and the staff of the Office of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Presbytery leaders are gathered a few times/year for retreats in our Synod, and for monthly supportive zoom check-in meetings.

The three Presbyteries in New England – Southern NE, Boston and Northern NE – are having collaborative conversations about shared ministries. Whoever joins us as our new Stated Clerk would be part of these conversations, experiments and areas of growth. We are in a time of much transition, with many exciting opportunities for shared ministry and are seeking a candidate who is open to experimentation, where the Spirit is taking us, and being open to new ministry landscapes.

We encourage candidates for this position to consult the Church Leadership Connection system (http://pcusa.org/clc) and the Northeast Crossroads Call Finder (https://mynextcallpcusa.org/) for additional opportunities within the Presbyteries of Boston & Southern New England.

Because the role of Stated Clerk is an Ecclesiastical Officer of a governing body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), as per the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) we can only accept applications from those ordained as Teaching Elders (Minister of Word and Sacrament) and Ruling Elders whose ordination is in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We strongly encourage the applications of women, persons of color and other minority groups. The Presbyteries of Boston and Southern New England do not discriminate based on age, race, color, marital status, sexual orientation, gender or gender expression, military status or disability. Both Presbyteries are Matthew 25 Presbyteries and so committed to vital congregations, anti-racism, poverty alleviation alongside intersectional ministry goals of addressing militarism, gender justice and the climate crisis.
